Camera M Manual
Image File Formats
Camera M has an extensive array of image file format choices that are accessible within Quick Settings. Image file formats are specific to each Shooting mode, and the user choice is saved per each Shooting mode.
P3 Wide color is supported where available. Check here: Compatibility
The currently selected image format is always shown on the main screen, top left of the screen on iPhones with True Depth Camera System, or Quick Settings button on Control Center for all other iPhones and iPads.

JPEG image format is the most common processed image format found in iOS devices and the most compatible. This is the default format for devices not compatible with HEIF format.
Hardware encoding : Supported
File saving : Fast
File size : Medium (~3MB)
Stabilization: Digital and optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : All
Supported Shooting modes: All
Supported cameras: All
JPEG HIGH image format is the same as JPEG but with minimum compression. This allows the image to contain more data, but with almost doubled the file size. If the image is later meant to be edited or modified, this format is recommended over regular JPEG.
Hardware encoding : Supported
File saving : Fast
File size : Medium (~5MB)
Stabilization: Digital and optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : All
Supported Shooting modes: All
Supported cameras: All
High Efficiency Image Format, HEIF, is the new processed image file format supported by newer iOS devices and has many advantages over JPEG: speed, smaller file size due to smarter compression, and quality. This is the default format for compatible devices.
Hardware encoding : Supported
File saving : Fast
File size : Small (~1MB)
Stabilization: Digital and optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : Check Compatibility
Supported Shooting modes: All
Supported cameras: All
HEIF HIGH image format is the same as HEIF but with minimum compression. This allows the image to contain more data, but with over five times the file size. If the image is later meant to be edited or modified, this format is recommended over regular HEIF.
Hardware encoding : Supported
File saving : Fast
File size : Medium (~5MB)
Stabilization: Digital and optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : Check Compatibility
Supported Shooting modes: All
Supported cameras: All
Portable Network Graphics, PNG, is a processed image format that is popular for instances where edges of the contents of the image need to be preserved.
Hardware encoding : Unsupported
File saving : Slow
File size : Large (~10 MB)
Stabilization: Digital and optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : All
Supported Shooting modes: Single, Timer
Supported cameras: All
Tagged Image File Format, TIFF, is a processed image format with the image quality preserved the best, compared to other processed formats. This format has the highest file size.
Hardware encoding : Unsupported
File saving : Slow
File size : Extra large (~50 MB)
Stabilization: Digital and optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : All
Supported Shooting modes: Single, Timer
Supported cameras: All
RAW contains raw sensor data that is suitable for post-processing. This is also called Bayer RAW.
For compatibility and convenience, iOS RAW files are contained inside a DNG format wrapper.
When previewing RAW files on Camera Roll, a processed preview image is required, otherwise, the file would show up as blank. Camera M, by default, saves a full-resolution JPEG along with the RAW file and the option to turn it off is present inside Settings under ‘RAW with JPEG Preview’. When turned off, the preview looks low in resolution to reduce file size; however, the actual RAW file is the same and untouched.
File saving : Fast
File size : Large (~10 MB)
Stabilization: Optical (Check for OIS Compatibility)
Supported devices : Check Compatibility
Supported Shooting modes: Single, Burst, Timer, Bracket
Supported cameras: Wide, Telephoto
When shared within Camera M Camera Roll, RAW DNG images with a full-resultion JPEG image get additional options:
RAW - Share just the RAW DNG image without the preview image.
JPEG - Share just the full-resolution JPEG version of the image
For bulk RAW DNG exporting, we recommend using a Mac with iCloud sharing turned on:
Photos > Export > Export Unmodified Original Photo.
Apple ProRAW brings the power of iOS computational photography to RAW. It provides benefits of multi-frame image processing and computational photography, like Deep Fusion and Smart HDR, and combines them with the depth and flexibility of a RAW format. This is a mosaic RAW format.
Camera M ProRAW relies heavily on Max Image Processing to apply additional noise reduction, stabilization, and other types of image processing as well as Deep Fusion and Smart HDR. Disabling Max Image Processing may result in faster image saving.
When previewing ProRAW files on Camera Roll, a processed preview image is required, otherwise, the file would show up as blank. Camera M, by default, saves a full-resolution JPEG along with the ProRAW file and the option to turn it off is present inside Settings under ‘RAW with HEIF Preview’. When turned off, the preview looks low in resolution to reduce file size; however, the actual ProRAW file is the same and untouched.
File saving : Slow
File size : Large (~25 MB)
Stabilization: Digital, optical, and Sensor-shift
Supported devices : iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max
Supported Shooting modes: Single, Timer, Bracket
Supported cameras: All
When shared within Camera M Camera Roll, ProRAW DNG images with a full-resolution HEIF image get additional options:
RAW - Share just the ProRAW DNG image without the preview image.
HEIF - Share just the full-resolution HEIF version of the image
For bulk ProRAW DNG exporting, we recommend using a Mac with iCloud sharing turned on:
Photos > Export > Export Unmodified Original Photo.
